How to raise your Gemini API rate limits

The Gemini API puts each project on a usage tier. The project moves up automatically once its billing account meets the spend and time rules for the next one.

Where do you see your tier and limits?

Your project’s tier is on the Projects page in AI Studio. Your live limits are on the rate limit page, which is where Google’s own rate limits page sends you for per-model numbers.

How do you move up a tier?

Set up billing in AI Studio to leave the free tier. From then on, tiers move on their own once your billing account meets the criteria.

TierTo reach itMonthly capPer 10 minutes
Tier 1Billing linked$250$10
Tier 2$100 paid, 3 days$2,000$50
Tier 3$1,000 paid, 30 days$20,000 to $100,000+$200

Rates as listed on Google’s Rate limits page, checked November 2, 2026. Days count from your first successful payment. The last column is the spend limit for any rolling 10 minutes.

The time rule means you can’t buy your way to Tier 3 in a day. The spend rule is looser than it looks, though, because it counts everything on the billing account across Google Cloud. A company that already pays for other Google Cloud services may qualify sooner than it expects.

Meeting the criteria is generally enough, according to Google, though in rare cases an upgrade can be denied after review.

Which limit are you actually hitting?

Gemini’s limits fail in different ways, so work out which one you hit before you ask for more.

Rate limits are RPM, TPM and requests per day, all set per project. Requests per day reset at midnight Pacific time.

The spend-based limit is the rolling 10-minute cap in the table. Whether it applies to you depends on your billing history and account standing. It returns 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED, and the fix is to wait and retry or cut back on expensive requests.

The monthly tier cap is set on the billing account. Once the account total reaches it, service pauses for every linked project until the next billing cycle.

How do you ask for more?

Google has two different forms.

  1. For rate limits, use the paid tier rate limit increase form. Google offers no guarantees here.
  2. For the monthly cap, use the spend cap increase form linked from the billing docs.

If you keep hitting the 10-minute spend limit during normal use, Google says to use the rate limit form for that as well.

Can you get more out of the limits you have?

Batch requests have their own limits, separate from live calls, so move anything that can wait there.

Experimental and preview models have tighter limits. A test that runs fine on one can still fall over at production volume, so check the limits for the exact model you plan to ship on.

Questions

How long does a Gemini tier upgrade take?

Free to Tier 1 is typically instant. Later upgrades take effect within 10 minutes of meeting the criteria.

Does other Google Cloud spend count toward Gemini tiers?

Yes. Tiers 2 and 3 are based on total cumulative spending on Google Cloud services for the billing account linked to your project, not only the Gemini API.

Are Gemini rate limits per key or per project?

Per project. A second API key in the same project won't give you more.

Is a rate limit increase guaranteed?

No. Google says it offers no guarantees but will review the request.
